I often refer to kid's yoga as 'the yoga of low expectation'. And I mean it in the most affectionate of ways.
Our lives are overscheduled. Busy. Crazy. Hectic. Overwhelming. While we all know that we need to slow it down, go with things, we rarely do. That's why I love kid's yoga. I always go into a class with a general concept or theme, maybe a few notes jotted down of a sequence I think they might like, or a craft project that would be fun. But I go in with zero expectations of any of it actually happening. I let the kids, to a certain extent, lead me on the journey they want to be on. Without letting the class disintegrate into chaos (and trust me, that's the tricky part), I attach onto their energy and go with it. Kids get so excited about stuff. Little stuff that us big people don't care about. They imagine, they believe, and they absolutely don't care how they look or what you think of them. And that's my favorite thing of all.
My little four year olds wanted to go to the Amazon last week. They wanted to take a train. So we did, choo-chooing around the room and shouting out what we saw on our (very short) ride to the Amazon jungle. We sat in a canoe and paddled down the river, pointed out animals we saw and mimicked their noises. We ate our lunch on the banks of the river with the monkeys and parrots (I don not claim accuracy on our trips. One kid insisted there were parakeets and hamsters. I went with it.) These kids took this seriously. We were totally there, and we all had a blast! Two of them tackled me when we were done showering me with hugs and kisses, and I was honored. When I tell them 'the light in me sees the light in you'- I really do! Their purity of imagination shines on out of them. It's s true honor to be with them.
I feel deepest gratitude to parents that entrust their children to me for an hour. It's a privilege to teach and play games and share something I love. This week will be a snowflake project, celebrating their sparkling, shining individualism. But you never know. The kids may want to take a boat to India. And I wouldn't miss that trip for anything!
